Asian Butterfly
I again stand idle at a crosswalk waiting for the light to turn red and the little guy to appear. He doesn’t. Just a remnant of the big flashing red hand. Guess this is what I get for daydreaming. I noticed that one of my shoes were untied. I crouched and tied it quickly anticipating that the light would change just as fast… wrong again.
I looked ahead twice over, praying that my eyes weren’t deceiving me. This was real. SHE was real!
This new arrival startled me for a moment like a deer caught in the headlights. I didn’t know how she got there or where she came from but I did know where she was going.
Towards me!
She was Asian and exotic by design but mysterious and lovely by the beholder.
She too was waiting to make her way through the intersecting threshold. But to where?
A short gust of wind began to blow between us. It blew her hair in front of her face creating a blur in her vision. My hair is nappy, it never moves.
What a stimulating cultural diffusion.
I could tell the wind bothered her but she didn’t seem to mind. She glanced at me while she reached for something in her purse she was carrying.
I looked away, not allowing her to have any thoughts of the two of us. Those thoughts were mine, but I’m willing to share.
I looked at my watch to insure her that I wasn’t paying any attention. After a few moments I looked back at her. The purse she had cradle in her arm like a child had a picture of a butterfly
on it with Chinese characters.
She took out a comb and began to comb her hair back, then pulled it back tight and with her
comb rolled it around and pinned it in a bun leaving only a few strands of hair in the front.
Wow!
I looked to see if the traffic like was changing and it was. From green, to yellow and…
No! Not yet, not now!
The walk light came into view and we both made our way to each other. I looked at her a few seconds more, for a few more seconds of pleasure.
I noticed that when we passed, she glanced at me and gave a smile, her hair strands pulling my way as if to reach out and touch. I made my way across and looked back to see where she was
going, she was gone, in that instant.
Bye bye butterfly.
